Length/ severity of Ph.D course work and examinations
Comprehensive examination in the USA as the real crunch point. Wide variety of requirements in Europe, even between closely co-operating countries. Non-uniform shifts towards US patterns.
Role of part-time (or even full-time) employment
Teaching and Research assistants (TA's and RA's in the USA). Encouragement of in-service education and of continuing professional development. Growth of private sector institutions, versus Universities?
Large undergraduate classes as edutainment?
Universities' dependence on standards in schools and on student choice. Students as customers, do we just give them what they want? How do we generate/ retain interest in a short-term memory environment?
Internet access from residences/ lodgings
Don't underestimate the importance of a free local phone call & small file size. Wired cities/ countries, led by Finland, Norway, Australia & New Zealand? Leading (bleeding?) versus trailing edge approaches.
